In a stunning move, Carlton Football Club has secured the services of Graham Wright, the mastermind behind Collingwood’s 2023 AFL premiership, as their new CEO. Wright, a highly sought-after executive, will initially serve as deputy to current CEO Brian Cook before taking the reins full-time as part of a carefully planned handover.
This significant coup for Carlton comes after Wright’s departure from Collingwood earlier this year, following a leave of absence. Adelaide Football Club had also attempted to lure Wright to lead their football program, but Carlton has managed to secure his signature.
Wright’s impressive resume includes a 1990 premiership with Collingwood as a player, as well as a successful stint at Hawthorn under Alastair Clarkson, where he played a key role in building the list that won four premierships. He joined Collingwood in 2021 and delivered the 2023 premiership before taking a break from the AFL.
The 56-year-old’s decision to join Carlton marks a new chapter in his illustrious career, which spans 35 years in the AFL as a player and executive. His departure from Collingwood will undoubtedly be felt, particularly after the team’s failure to make the finals this season.
Carlton, meanwhile, is looking to rebound from their disappointing elimination-final exit this season, which was marred by injuries. The arrival of Wright is expected to bring a fresh perspective and new energy to the club as they strive to return to the top of the AFL ladder.
