In a thrilling upset, the New York Liberty took down the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, securing a 3-1 series victory with a 76-62 win. This marks the Liberty’s sixth trip to the WNBA Finals and their second consecutive appearance.
Sabrina Ionescu led the charge with 22 points, while Breanna Stewart dominated the court with 19 points and 14 rebounds. A’ja Wilson put up a valiant effort for the Aces, tallying 19 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Liberty’s momentum.
The Liberty’s win puts an end to the Aces’ bid to become the second team in WNBA history to win three championships in a row. New York’s players took to social media to celebrate their victory, playfully trolling the Aces with memes and jokes. The team even Photoshopped Timberland boots onto the Aces’ logo, a nod to the popular New York footwear.
Next, the Liberty will face off against the winner of the Minnesota Lynx and Connecticut Sun series. Despite their impressive performance, the Liberty have yet to win a WNBA championship in their franchise history. Will this be their year?
