Florida Panthers’ Star Forward Secures Lucrative Long-Term Deal

In a move that solidifies his commitment to the team, Carter Verhaeghe has inked an eight-year contract extension with the Florida Panthers worth a staggering $56 million. The announcement came on Tuesday evening, following the team’s championship banner-raising ceremony and their 6-4 season-opening victory over the Boston Bruins.

Verhaeghe, 29, has been an integral part of the Panthers’ success, including their historic Stanley Cup win last season. His new deal, which kicks in for the 2025-26 season, carries an average annual value of $7 million and includes a substantial $48 million in guaranteed signing bonus money. The contract also features trade protection, ensuring Verhaeghe’s long-term future with the team.

Since joining the Panthers as a free agent in 2020, Verhaeghe has amassed an impressive 236 points, including 118 goals, in 278 games. His postseason prowess has been particularly noteworthy, with 53 points in 61 playoff games, including 11 goals and 10 assists during the team’s Cup-winning run last season.

Verhaeghe’s ability to perform under pressure has been a hallmark of his time with the Panthers, as evidenced by his 10 game-winning playoff goals, including the overtime winner in Game 7 against the Bruins in 2023.

“To have the opportunity to extend my time with the Panthers is an incredible honor,” Verhaeghe said. “I’m grateful to the organization for believing in me and giving me the chance to be a part of something special.”

The deal’s announcement was foreshadowed during Monday’s championship ring ceremony, where Panthers owner Vincent Viola hinted at the impending agreement during his presentation to Verhaeghe.

“It’s what I wanted,” Verhaeghe said of the owner’s promise. “He said some really nice things to everyone. It was awesome.”

While Verhaeghe didn’t register a point in Tuesday’s win, his teammates Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad shone, with Bennett scoring twice in the victory. Both players are set to become unrestricted free agents after this season, making Verhaeghe’s long-term commitment all the more significant for the Panthers.
