In the Windy City, the Carolina Panthers’ struggles continued as they fell to the Chicago Bears, trailing 36-10 with just over four minutes remaining in the game. In a last-ditch effort, quarterback Bryce Young took the field for the first time since being benched after a dismal 0-2 start. Young’s first play was a promising one, as he dodged defenders and connected with running back Miles Sanders for a 27-yard gain.
Despite the spark Young brought, coach Dave Canales reaffirmed that Andy Dalton would remain the starter for next week’s NFC South showdown against the Atlanta Falcons. Canales praised Young’s performance, saying he did a “fantastic job” and showed great energy, but emphasized the need to focus on fundamentals and improve upon past mistakes.
The decision to bring in Young was also motivated by a desire to protect Dalton, who was under intense pressure with two offensive line starters sidelined due to injuries. Center Austin Corbett suffered a biceps injury, while right tackle Taylor Moton hurt his elbow, and both will undergo MRIs on Monday.
Dalton, 36, had a lackluster performance, completing 18 of 28 passes for 136 yards and an interception, earning a 61.0 passer rating. Young, on the other hand, completed 4 of 7 attempts for 57 yards and an 84.2 rating in his limited appearance.
When asked about his chances of regaining the starting role, Young remained humble, saying it was “out of my control” and that he focused on controlling what he could. The young quarterback has been taking his benching in stride, saying he’s proud to be part of the team and play with his teammates.
The Panthers’ injury woes continued to mount, with outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney leaving the game with a shoulder injury and four defensive starters already sidelined. Clowney expressed frustration with the team’s injury situation, but hopes to return to the lineup next week.
