In the midst of a dismal start to the season, Cincinnati Bengals Head Coach Zac Taylor is taking full responsibility for the team’s 1-4 record. Despite boasting a talented roster, Taylor acknowledges that he hasn’t done enough to secure wins. “I need to put our team in a better position to succeed,” Taylor said. “We have the talent, but it’s up to me to maximize it and bring home victories.”
Quarterback Joe Burrow has been a bright spot, throwing a career-high five touchdowns in Sunday’s loss to the Ravens. However, Burrow’s late-game interception led to the game-tying field goal, forcing overtime. Through Week 5, Burrow ranks second in Total QBR, trailing only Josh Allen.
Burrow’s assessment of the team’s performance is candid: “We’re not a championship-level team right now. We need to improve throughout the season to get to that point.” Taylor stands by his decision-making, including the choice not to be more aggressive in overtime. Wide receivers Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase expressed their desire for more aggressiveness, but Taylor believes the risk of taking a negative play was too high.
As the Bengals prepare to face the New York Giants (2-3) on Sunday, Taylor is committed to evaluating every aspect of the team’s operation. “Everything is on the table,” Taylor said. “We’re disappointed, and we know we should have more wins at this point. I’m accountable for that, and we’ll work tirelessly to find a way to get back on track.”
