In a major coup, the West Coast Eagles have welcomed back a beloved figure to the nest, appointing club legend John Worsfold as their new head of football. The 56-year-old, who captained the team to two premierships and coached them to another in 2006, will oversee the entire football program, working closely with existing managers Gavin Bell, Michelle Cowan, and Steve Trewhella.
Worsfold’s return marks the latest chapter in a period of significant change at the club. Following a slump in form, premiership coach Adam Simpson stepped down in July, making way for Andrew McQualter. Don Pyke took the reins as CEO at the end of last year, while Elizabeth Gaines became the club’s first female chair last month. The Eagles have also revamped their fitness and list management teams, with Oscar Allen and Liam Duggan leading the charge as joint captains.
Worsfold, who spent four years as general manager of people and culture at Emeco Group, brings a wealth of experience to the role. His coaching credentials were recently recognized with the 2024 Neale Daniher Lifetime Achievement Award. Pyke hailed the appointment, saying Worsfold’s expertise would provide “vital assistance, leadership, and support” to the club’s teams.
Worsfold, who starts on November 4, expressed his excitement at returning to the club, saying he was looking forward to working with the “outstanding leaders” across all competitions. With his unique blend of playing and coaching experience, Worsfold is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the Eagles’ future success.
