Renowned Indian Wrestler Turns Politician, Wins Big in Haryana Assembly Elections
In a remarkable turn of events, celebrated wrestler Vinesh Phogat has emerged victorious in the Haryana Assembly elections, securing a seat from the Julana constituency as a Congress party candidate. With a convincing margin of over 6,000 votes, Phogat has made history, becoming the first Congress candidate to win from Julana since 2005.
In her post-victory statement, Phogat emphasized that her triumph is not just a personal achievement, but a collective victory for every woman who dares to challenge the status quo. She expressed her gratitude to the people of India for their unwavering support and trust, promising to uphold their faith in her.
Phogat’s opponents in the election included prominent figures such as Captain Yogesh Bairagi from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Amarjeet Dhanda from the Jannayak Janta Party, and Kavita Dalal from the Aam Aadmi Party.
The wrestling fraternity was quick to congratulate Phogat on her win, with Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia leading the charge. Punia, who had joined forces with Phogat in their protest against former wrestling federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, hailed her victory as a triumph over oppressive forces.
Prior to the election results, Phogat had pledged to fight for women’s rights and tackle unemployment in the state. Her entry into politics marks a new chapter in her illustrious career, which has seen her win multiple gold medals at the World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games.
Phogat’s decision to enter politics came after a tumultuous period in her wrestling career, which saw her disqualified from the Paris Olympics due to a weight limit issue. Although she appealed to the Court of Arbitration of Sport, her bid for a joint-silver medal was ultimately rejected. The incident sparked widespread debate about the fairness of wrestling’s weigh-in rules.
