In a devastating turn of events, the Indianapolis Colts suffered a significant blow to their roster during Sunday’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Right guard Will Fries went down with a severe injury to his right tibia, which will require immediate surgery.
The incident occurred with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter, when Fries became entangled between two Jaguars defenders while blocking for running back Trey Sermon. The Colts’ medical team rushed to his aid, stabilizing his leg with an air cast before carefully transporting him off the field on a backboard.
Head coach Shane Steichen expressed his concern for Fries’ well-being, saying, “Our thoughts are with him and his family during this difficult time.” According to sources, Fries indeed suffered a fracture, which will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the team’s already fragile lineup.
The Colts are already grappling with the absence of starting quarterback Anthony Richardson, who is nursing an oblique injury, and running back Jonathan Taylor, who is sidelined with an ankle sprain. Fries’ injury only exacerbates the team’s struggles, which were evident in their 37-34 loss to the Jaguars.
Despite a valiant effort to overcome a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter, the Colts ultimately fell short, surrendering a game-winning field goal with mere seconds remaining on the clock. Coach Steichen acknowledged the challenges his team faces, stating, “This is the NFL – it’s not easy. Our guys fight hard, but we need to find ways to close out games.”
The Colts’ loss marks their 10th consecutive defeat on the road against the Jaguars, a streak that spans three head coaches, eight starting quarterbacks, and even a transatlantic matchup in London. As the team looks to regroup and move forward, they will undoubtedly be keeping Fries in their thoughts, hoping for a speedy recovery from his serious injury.
