In Ashburn, Virginia, the Washington Commanders received a boost with the news that star running back Austin Ekeler has been cleared from the concussion protocol and will take the field on Sunday. Ekeler’s return comes after a one-game absence due to a concussion sustained in the team’s Week 3 victory over Cincinnati.
Coach Dan Quinn expressed optimism about Ekeler’s readiness, stating, “Austin is doing great; he had a really good week.” Ekeler’s presence will undoubtedly be felt, as he has been a key contributor to the team’s offense, catching nine passes for 121 yards and rushing 13 times for 83 yards in his first two-plus games.
However, the status of running back Brian Robinson Jr. remains uncertain. Robinson, who has been dealing with a right knee injury, did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday but returned to practice on Friday. While Coach Quinn described Robinson as “trending in the right way,” he will be listed as questionable and will be a game-time decision.
The Commanders will be without receiver Noah Brown, who is nursing a groin injury, and defensive end Clelin Ferrell, who will miss his third consecutive game with a knee injury. In Brown’s absence, the team will rely on a rotation of receivers, including Olamide Zaccheaus, Luke McCaffrey, and Dyami Brown, who have combined for 12 catches and 116 yards.
If Robinson is unable to play, the Commanders may need to elevate a running back from the practice squad, such as Chris Rodriguez Jr. or Michael Wiley. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Robinson’s status, Coach Quinn remains confident in his team’s depth, saying, “Brian is doing great.”
