Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola Reveals Why Star Goalkeeper Stayed Put
In a recent press conference, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola shed light on why Éderson, the team’s prized goalkeeper, remained at the club despite interest from other teams during the summer transfer window. According to Guardiola, no suitor was willing to meet City’s valuation of the Brazilian shot-stopper.
Ederson, who has been instrumental in City’s success since joining from Benfica in 2017, was reportedly courted by Saudi Arabian clubs Al Nassr and Al Ittihad. However, Guardiola insisted that the offers received were not substantial enough to warrant a sale.
“The truth is, we didn’t receive a serious offer for Éderson,” Guardiola explained. “As a club that has won four consecutive Premier League titles, we have a certain standard to uphold. Our players have a value, and if that value isn’t met, they’re not going anywhere.”
Ederson’s impressive résumé includes six Premier League titles, two PFA Premier League team of the year nods, and three consecutive Premier League golden glove awards. The 31-year-old has maintained his position as City’s first-choice goalkeeper, fending off competition from Stefan Ortega, who signed a new contract in the summer.
Guardiola praised the healthy competition between Ederson and Ortega, stating that it brings out the best in both players. “I’ve always believed that Stefan is an exceptional goalkeeper, and Éderson needs to perform at his highest level to keep his spot. This rivalry makes our team stronger,” he said.
The City boss also expressed his gratitude for having Éderson on board, citing the significant role he’s played in the team’s success over the years. “I can’t imagine our achievements without him. We’re lucky to have him, and I hope he’s happy here,” Guardiola added.
