In the heart of Mississippi, the Sanderson Farms Championship is heating up, with Keith Mitchell taking the lead after a thrilling Saturday performance. With a 7-under 65, Mitchell dodged mistakes that plagued other contenders, securing a one-shot advantage heading into the final round.
Mitchell’s impressive finish, capped off by a 40-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and a precise approach on the 18th, puts him in prime position to snag a coveted spot in four elite PGA Tour events next year. The 20-under 196 score gives him a narrow edge over Beau Hossler, who’s hot on his heels.
Hossler, however, had a rollercoaster round, surrendering the lead with a double bogey on the 12th hole before recovering with two clutch par saves and three birdies. His 68 score keeps him in contention, alongside Mitchell, for the final showdown.
Kevin Yu’s late surge, fueled by two birdies, propelled him into third place, just two shots off the pace. As he chases his maiden PGA Tour victory, Yu will need to overcome a star-studded field, where only Mitchell and former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover have tasted tour success.
Glover, who carded a 68, downplayed the importance of experience, citing the depth of talent in the field. “Nerves are nerves, and knowing how to handle them is the difference,” he said. With eight players within five shots of the lead, Sunday’s final round promises to be a nail-biter.
