In a surprising turn of events, the Utah State women’s volleyball team has joined a growing list of programs opting out of matches against San Jose State, citing unspecified reasons. The Aggies announced their decision to forfeit their upcoming Mountain West Conference match on October 23, following in the footsteps of Boise State, which cancelled its September 28 match against the undefeated Spartans.
Wyoming also recently announced that its scheduled match against San Jose State would result in a 3-0 forfeit win for the Spartans. This marks the third consecutive cancellation against San Jose State, with Southern Utah being the first to opt out on September 14. The conference website lists the result as “canceled,” but attempts to reach Southern Utah for comment were met with silence.
Boise State and Wyoming have declined to elaborate on their decisions, fueling speculation among local politicians that the cancellations may be related to protecting women’s sports. Despite requests for comment, San Jose State officials have remained tight-lipped, refusing to make players or coaches available for interviews. Mountain West officials have also chosen not to comment on the matter.
The Spartans will take to the court again on Thursday night against Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colorado, before enjoying a brief hiatus until their October 10 home match against San Diego State.
