The national team’s coaching staff will announce a 36-man roster for the upcoming five-Test tour on Monday. Expect minimal surprises, as the same squad size was maintained during the recent championship, leaving little room for dramatic changes.
While continuity will be the theme, adjustments will be made in specific areas. In the prop department, the team boasts a strong, mobile, and technically proficient rotation. With the exception of one veteran player, the entire prop corps is under 28 years old, ensuring a bright future for the front row. Since the 2022 lows, the team’s scrum has significantly improved, focusing on mobility, ball skills, and set-piece strength.
The hooking position, however, presents concerns. With an experience void left by retirement and injury, the team needs a reliable, calm lineout thrower. One player stands out for his set-piece accuracy and work rate, making him an ideal addition to the squad.
In the lock department, the fourth spot is up for grabs between two players. While one edges the other in physicality, the other has been more consistent this year, making him the better choice.
The loose forward position is the most contestable area of the squad. The team must decide whether to retain a veteran player’s leadership and defensive skills or promote a dynamic young flanker. With several players vying for spots, the coaching staff faces a tough decision.
At halfback, the future is now. With one player departing next year, it’s time to invest in younger talent. A recovered player, who was previously a starting contender, should be included in the squad, along with two other promising halfbacks.
The first five-eighth position remains unchanged, with two experienced players set to battle for the top spot. In the midfield, continuity is key, but there’s a desire to promote a talented young center. The outside backs position sees minimal changes, but one player deserves another chance at Test level, having produced compelling form recently.
Overall, the coaching staff must balance experience with youth and potential, making tough decisions to ensure the team’s success in the upcoming tour.
