Tennis Competitions Undergo Major Format Overhaul
In a move to revamp the sport’s premier international team events, the governing body of tennis has announced significant changes to the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions. Starting next year, the Billie Jean King Cup Finals will feature eight teams, mirroring the existing Davis Cup Finals format.
The new format will see seven groups of three teams each compete in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers, with the group winners earning a spot in the 2025 Finals alongside a host nation. Meanwhile, the Davis Cup will undergo a major transformation, replacing its six-day group stage competition in September with seven home-or-away series played over two days. The winners of these ties will join a host nation in the November Finals.
According to tennis officials, the changes are designed to ease player schedules, increase competitiveness, and enhance the overall fan experience. “By aligning the Billie Jean King Cup Finals with the successful Davis Cup Final 8 format, we’re creating a more streamlined and exciting competition,” said a top tennis executive.
The move to home-or-away matches in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers starting in 2026 is also expected to add an extra layer of intensity to the competition. Bidding processes are currently underway to determine the hosts of next year’s Finals, with this year’s tournaments set to take place in Malaga, Spain.
Tennis officials believe the new format will have a positive impact on player health and the global fan experience. “This change is a key part of our long-term strategy to create the best possible competition format, and we’re confident it will be a win-win for everyone involved,” said a spokesperson.
