In Shanghai, the world’s top tennis players showcased their skills, with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner leading the charge. Fresh from their thrilling China Open final, the duo cruised through their opening matches, demonstrating remarkable endurance.
Alcaraz, ranked second globally, dominated China’s Shang Juncheng 6-2, 6-2, extending his winning streak to 10 matches. The 19-year-old Chinese player, who recently claimed his first ATP title in Chengdu, put up a valiant fight but ultimately fell short against the in-form Spaniard.
“I’m not accustomed to facing opponents younger than me,” Alcaraz admitted. “Shang has been playing exceptional tennis, and I’m confident he’ll rise through the ranks. I’m thrilled to have come out on top in this encounter.”
Meanwhile, Sinner, currently embroiled in a doping controversy, brushed aside Japan’s Taro Daniel 6-1, 6-4, marking his 250th career victory. The Italian ace fired 12 aces and 38 winners, displaying his impressive form.
“I felt extremely comfortable today,” Sinner said. “My fitness level is crucial for me, and I’m pleased to be serving and moving well. It’s essential for my game.”
Other notable winners included third-ranked Alexander Zverev, who defeated Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci 6-4, 6-2, and fourth-ranked Novak Djokovic, who edged past Alex Michelsen of the United States 7-6 (3), 7-6 (9).
In a stunning upset, Czech Republic’s Jakub Mensik, ranked 65th, toppled sixth-ranked Andrey Rublev 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-3, breaking his opponent’s serve seven times. Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki also caused an upset, defeating No. 35-ranked Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (4), 6-3, setting up a clash with seventh-ranked Taylor Fritz of the United States or qualifier Terence Atmane of France.
