**Ponga Owns Up to Fucked Up Attempt to Bail on Aussie Team**

Rugby Star Reflects on Misstep in National Team Selection

Top rugby player, Kalyn Ponga, has acknowledged his mistake in attempting to withdraw from the national team’s selection process without consulting the coach, Mal Meninga. Ponga had initially stated that he wanted to prioritize his club’s pre-season, sparking a strong reaction from the league, which emphasized the contractual obligation of players to be available for representative duties.

Coach Meninga expressed his disappointment over the saga, feeling that he should have been contacted directly before Ponga made his decision public. However, Ponga eventually reversed his decision and made himself available for selection.

When asked about the incident, Ponga admitted, “I got the process wrong. My intentions were never malicious, but I understand I went about it the wrong way.” He added that if he had to do it again, he would definitely make some changes.

As the national team’s selectors prepare to meet next week to determine the squad for the upcoming tournament, Ponga’s availability is still uncertain. Incumbent captain James Tedesco is hoping to retain his position as fullback, while Dylan Edwards and Ponga himself are also being considered for the role.

Meanwhile, halfback Daly Cherry-Evans is likely to be selected, following confirmation that Nathan Cleary will require shoulder surgery. Cherry-Evans expressed his excitement about the possibility of playing, saying, “I’m definitely excited about potentially playing… Fingers crossed for Monday.”

The 35-year-old captain also hinted that he may continue to play for Queensland next year, despite being off contract at the end of the season. “I am always keen to keep playing,” he said. “I have to weigh up how long I want to keep playing in the NRL for, and if I want to keep playing in the NRL for forever and a day, something has to give at some stage.”
