Top Prospect Stays Focused on Present, Refuses to Get Caught Up in NBA Hype
In a recent interview, highly touted freshman forward Cooper Flagg made it clear that he’s not getting ahead of himself despite being pegged as the top pick in next year’s NBA draft. “It’s not a guarantee,” Flagg emphasized. “I’m taking things one day at a time, focusing on my team and this season. That’s what matters most to me right now.”
Flagg’s coach, Jon Scheyer, echoed his player’s sentiments, cautioning against assuming anything when it comes to the draft. “We’ve seen guys projected to go first who ultimately didn’t,” Scheyer noted. “Cooper’s got to prove himself, and I know he’s not taking anything for granted. He’s all about putting in the work and earning his spot.”
The 17-year-old phenom has already made a strong impression on NBA scouts and executives, holding his own in scrimmages against some of the game’s all-time greats during a summer stint with USA Basketball’s Select Team. As he prepares for his freshman campaign, Flagg is surrounded by a talented crop of prospects vying for the top spot in the draft. Rutgers’ Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper, as well as Baylor’s V.J. Edgecombe, are just a few of the players looking to make their mark in college competition and challenge Flagg for the top spot.
Despite the hype, Flagg remains committed to his team and the present moment. “I’m not worried about the draft right now,” he reiterated. “I’m focused on what we need to do this year, and that’s what matters most to me.”
