In a thrilling Europa League matchup, Manchester United’s promising start was marred by a stunning collapse, as they surrendered a two-goal advantage to draw 3-3 with FC Porto on Thursday. The Red Devils were coasting at 2-0 up after just 20 minutes, but Porto stormed back with two goals in seven minutes to level the score by halftime.
Despite conceding again shortly after the break, United’s captain was sent off for the second consecutive game, leaving his team with an uphill battle. However, a stoppage-time equalizer from substitute Harry Maguire salvaged a point for the visitors.
Manchester United’s manager lamented his team’s lack of focus, stating, “We scored two excellent goals, but then we lost our concentration. We failed to maintain possession and defend effectively, which led to unnecessary concessions.” He praised his team’s resilience, though, saying, “The guys showed great character in fighting back and finding a way to equalize.”
The manager also faced questions about his decision to substitute star forward Marcus Rashford at halftime. Rashford had scored United’s opening goal and looked sharp throughout the game, but was replaced by Alejandro Garnacho. The manager initially cited the need to keep Rashford fresh for the upcoming trip to Aston Villa, but later hinted that the substitution was also influenced by Porto’s first-half goals, which came from crosses on Rashford’s side of the pitch.
“Garnacho has been one of our top performers this season, consistently creating chances and scoring goals,” the manager explained. “We needed to give him playing time, and unfortunately, that meant replacing Rashford. While Marcus played a role in our defensive lapses, it was a tactical decision to bring in Garnacho.”
