In the world of professional football, a strong running game can be a game-changer for any team. It’s not just about racking up yards, but about wearing down the opposing defense and taking control of the tempo of the game. For the Las Vegas Raiders, establishing a potent ground attack has been a top priority since the start of training camp.
According to Coach Antonio Pierce, a former NFL linebacker, a strong running game can be mentally, emotionally, and physically draining for the opposing defense. “When a team is running the ball on you, that gets into your head,” Pierce explained. “It just wears on you.” By committing to the run, the Raiders aim to open up their playbook and create opportunities for big plays down the field.
In their recent matchup against the Cleveland Browns, the Raiders finally saw their running game come alive. With a total of 152 yards on the ground, Las Vegas averaged an impressive 5.2 yards per rush. The team’s running backs, Zamir White and Alexander Mattison, were heavily involved, and receivers Tre Tucker and DJ Turner even got in on the action with rushing touchdowns on gadget plays.
The Raiders’ newfound emphasis on the run couldn’t come at a better time, especially with star receiver Davante Adams sidelined due to a hamstring issue. As the team prepares to face off against the Denver Broncos, who have limited their past two opponents to just 155 rushing yards, establishing a strong ground game will be crucial.
Rookie guard Jackson Powers-Johnson, who made his first NFL start against the Browns, was instrumental in the team’s success. “If it wasn’t for [Powers-Johnson] and the big guys up front, there’s no running game,” praised Mattison. The Raiders’ new-look offensive line, featuring Powers-Johnson and fellow rookie DJ Glaze, will be key in determining the team’s success in the coming weeks.
As the Raiders look to build on their momentum, they’ll need to continue to pound the rock and wear down their opponents. With their running game finally showing signs of life, Las Vegas is poised to make a push in the competitive AFC West.
