In Beijing, the China Open witnessed a thrilling match as world number two, Aryna Sabalenka, extended her remarkable winning streak to 15 consecutive victories. The three-time Grand Slam champion defeated Madison Keys 6-4, 6-3, securing her spot in the quarterfinals.
Sabalenka’s impressive run began with her title win in Cincinnati in August, followed by her championship triumph at the US Open last month. Earlier this year, she also claimed the Australian Open title. This streak matches her career-best record, achieved across the 2020-21 seasons.
The Belarusian tennis star expressed her elation, saying, “When you put in the hard work and make sacrifices, the feeling of winning is unbeatable. You’re living your best life, excited for each match, and ready to face any challenge that comes your way.”
During her current streak, Sabalenka has dominated her opponents, winning 30 out of 31 sets. Her only dropped set was against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round of the US Open.
In Wednesday’s match, Sabalenka broke Keys’ serve in the third game of the first set and maintained her momentum throughout the 65-minute encounter. She lost only five points on her first serve and saved both break points against her, despite Keys hitting 22 winners and committing 10 unforced errors.
Sabalenka will face Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals, who defeated Cristina Bucsa 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile, Paris Olympics gold medalist Zheng Qinwen will take on Amanda Anisimova in a night match.
