Rugby League Star Claims Top Honour, Eyes Championship Glory
In a thrilling conclusion to the season’s awards, Jahrome Hughes has taken out the league’s most prestigious individual accolade, edging out rival James Tedesco by a single point. The Melbourne Storm halfback becomes the first New Zealander to claim the top prize in 32 years, capping off an incredible season that has seen him rise to the top of his game.
Hughes’ achievement was met with an impromptu haka, led by teammate Will Warbrick alongside Eliesa Katoa and Joseph Tapine. The Storm No.7 has been instrumental in his team’s success this season, stepping up in the absence of Cameron Munster and helping guide Melbourne to the grand final.
Despite his individual success, Hughes remains focused on the ultimate team goal – winning the championship. “I don’t really play the game for individual accolades, I play it for team accolades,” he said. “That was the way I was looking at it coming into it.”
With the grand final against Penrith looming, Hughes is determined to add a premiership to his Dally M Medal. If successful, he would become only the eighth player in history to achieve the feat in the same year.
The Storm had a big night, with Craig Bellamy named coach of the year, Harry Grant taking out hooker of the year, and Xavier Coates receiving the try-of-the-year award. Meanwhile, Olivia Kernick won the women’s top prize, finishing two points clear of her nearest rivals.
Hughes’ remarkable turnaround is a testament to his hard work and dedication. From bouncing around clubs early in his career to becoming one of the league’s top players, he is an inspiration to aspiring rugby league stars everywhere.
