American soccer star Chris Richards believes the recent hiring of a world-class coach is a clear indication of the country’s commitment to elevating the sport. Richards, who plays for Crystal Palace in the Premier League, expressed his excitement about the new direction of the national team, despite being left out of the first squad due to a hamstring injury.
The omission is expected to sideline him for four weeks, but Richards will be keeping a close eye on his teammates as they embark on a new era under their esteemed coach. He praises the bold move, saying it demonstrates the country’s ambition to become a major force in the sport.
“You can’t deny the coach’s impressive track record in club football,” Richards said. “It’s a statement of intent from the governing body, showing they’re serious about taking the game to the next level. They could have played it safe by appointing a domestic coach, but instead, they’ve opted for a top-tier candidate.”
Richards, who is passionate about growing the sport, emphasized the need to make it more accessible to all. “Soccer is the fastest-growing sport in the country, but it’s still a ‘pay-to-play’ system, which means many talented players fall through the cracks due to financial constraints,” he explained. “If we can eliminate this barrier, I’m confident the sport will flourish. With the World Cup on the horizon, I hope we can create a model that makes it affordable and accessible for everyone.”
The American defender is optimistic about the team’s chances in the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. “When people ask me how far I think we can go, I say we should aim to win it all,” Richards said. “We want to be the best, and we want to win.”
