In a Mississippi courtroom, a 16-year-old defendant has admitted to playing a role in the tragic death of a college football player. The teenager, from Laurel, Mississippi, was charged as an adult in connection with the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old athlete.
According to court records, the guilty plea was entered on Tuesday, with the defendant stating that the killing occurred during an armed robbery. The young defendant now faces a potential sentence of 20 to 40 years behind bars, although a specific sentencing date has not been set. For the time being, the defendant remains incarcerated.
The victim, a talented cornerback, was a standout player on his college team, having tied for the lead in interceptions with three and recorded 29 tackles in 12 games during the previous season. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior had recently switched positions to safety and was expected to start again in the upcoming season.
Prior to transferring to his current college in 2023, the athlete had played his first two college seasons at a different institution. He was a star player at George County High School before moving on to college athletics.
The three other individuals charged in connection with the shooting are still awaiting trial, having been denied bond in June.
