A rookie defensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns has been handed a five-game suspension without pay for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension stems from a summer incident involving a domestic altercation.
The player, a native of Ohio, pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct in September. As a result, he will be eligible for reinstatement after the Browns’ Week 5 matchup against the Washington Commanders.
Since the start of the regular season, the player has been on the commissioner’s exempt list. According to league policy, any regular-season games missed while on the exempt list will be counted towards the total suspension, but the player must forfeit their salary for those games.
The original charge of domestic violence was reduced, and the player received a 30-day suspended jail sentence, a fine, and two years of monitored time. A protection order between the player and his fiancée was recently dropped at her request.
The player, who played college football at Ohio State, was drafted by the Browns in the second round of the draft earlier this year.
