In a thrilling matchup, the Milwaukee Brewers edged out the New York Mets 5-3 on Wednesday night, tying their National League Wild Card Series. The teams will face off again on Thursday night in a decisive Game 3.
Trailing 3-2 in the eighth inning, Brewers’ rookie sensation Jackson Chourio stepped up to the plate and blasted his second homer of the night, a game-tying shot to right-center field. Chourio, just 20 years old, made history as the youngest player to hit a leadoff homer in the postseason and the first to hit a leadoff and game-tying homer in the same game.
The momentum shifted in the Brewers’ favor as pinch-hitter Garrett Mitchell delivered a two-run homer later in the eighth, sending the crowd at American Family Field into a frenzy. Mitchell’s 390-foot shot came on a first-pitch curveball, which he recognized early and sent soaring over the wall in right-center.
“I was just looking for something out over the plate and I recognized curveball early,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been getting ready since about the fourth inning, so I was just trying to stay active and ready to go.”
The Mets had taken the lead in the second inning after a crucial mistake by the Brewers’ pitcher around first base. With the score tied 1-1, the Mets’ Starling Marte hit a routine grounder to first baseman Rhys Hoskins, whose throw bounced off the pitcher’s glove as he went to cover the bag. The error led to two runs scoring, giving the Mets a 3-1 advantage.
However, the Brewers fought back, with Devin Williams retiring the side in order in the ninth to earn the save. Joe Ross picked up the win after pitching 1⅓ innings of scoreless relief.
The Brewers will look to make history on Thursday night, attempting to become the first team to rally from a loss in the opener to win a best-of-three wild-card series since the expanded playoff format was introduced in 2022.
