Renowned midfielder Luke Parker is poised to bring his illustrious career to a close at North Melbourne after submitting a formal trade request to the club. The 31-year-old informed the Sydney Swans of his decision on Wednesday, putting an end to months of speculation surrounding his playing future.
Parker’s potential move to the Kangaroos was first hinted at by coach Alastair Clarkson in August, who expressed his desire to acquire an experienced player to mentor the club’s young talent. The decorated veteran had struggled to regain his spot in the senior team after suffering a broken arm in a pre-season match and was subsequently relegated to the VFL.
Despite being contracted to Sydney until the end of 2025, Parker is eager to embark on a new chapter in his career. The former co-captain, who played a pivotal role in the Swans’ 2012 premiership triumph, has amassed an impressive 293 games for the club.
In a heartfelt statement, Parker reflected on his 14-year tenure with the Swans, saying, “Leaving the club that has given me so much is a difficult decision, but one I feel is necessary. Sydney has been my home, and the Swans have become my family. I’ve shared unforgettable memories with my teammates and the fans, who have shown me unwavering support.”
Sydney coach John Longmire paid tribute to Parker’s remarkable career, praising his unwavering competitiveness and resilience. “Luke has been an absolute joy to coach, and his football résumé is among the best in the game. He’s been an integral part of our team’s success, and his legacy will be remembered for years to come.”
