The wait is almost over! With just weeks to go until the start of the 2024-25 NBA season, all eyes are fixed on Opening Night on October 22. This offseason has been filled with blockbuster trades, including the recent deal that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks. Towns joins a list of All-Stars on the move, including Klay Thompson, Paul George, and Chris Paul.
Before the real action begins, players and coaches from 28 teams gathered for media day ahead of training camp. Our insiders were on site to capture the key moments from around the league.
In Philadelphia, the 76ers reflected on the legacy of Dikembe Mutombo, who passed away recently. Center Joel Embiid, a native of Cameroon, spoke about the impact Mutombo had on African basketball history and his own career. “It’s a sad day, especially for us Africans — and really the whole world — because, other than what he’s accomplished on the basketball court, I think he was even better off the court,” Embiid said.
In New York, the Knicks are excited about the addition of Towns, who will bring a new dimension to their offense. Wing Josh Hart said the team is confident about its chances this season, despite the tough competition in the Eastern Conference. “It’s definitely gonna be tougher. A lot of teams made big moves this offseason. It’s not gonna be easy. It’s not gonna be a cakewalk,” Hart said.
In Minnesota, the Timberwolves are adjusting to life without Towns. Rudy Gobert and Anthony Edwards spoke about the impact of the trade on the team, with Gobert saying it’s a “big surprise” and Edwards calling Towns his “brother.”
In San Francisco, Stephen Curry reflected on his iconic Olympic moment, when he hit a game-winning shot against France. Curry said he learned some French during his time in Paris and remembered the reactions of his teammates and opponents after the shot. “I see the two guys, but I’m already in rhythm,” Curry said. “As long as I get it off, I know I’m going to make it.”
In San Antonio, the Spurs are looking forward to a new era with Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul. Coach Gregg Popovich spoke about the potential for international coaches to make an impact in the NBA, citing former France coach Vincent Collet as an example.
Finally, in Detroit, the Pistons are hoping to join the city’s other sports teams in the playoffs. Star Cade Cunningham said he’s motivated by the success of the Lions and Tigers and wants to bring that same excitement to the Pistons. “We want to bring that same joy to the Pistons,” Cunningham said. “It’s a challenge that we’re all excited to take on.”
