Top-tier soccer coach Gerardo Martino has expressed confidence that his team, Inter Miami, possesses the necessary skills to secure a spot in the upcoming 2025 Club World Cup. The tournament, set to take place in the United States, will feature an expanded 32-team format, with four slots allocated to Concacaf teams.
Martino’s remarks came after his team’s recent victory, which clinched the Supporters’ Shield title with 68 points in 32 games. This achievement marks Inter Miami’s first major trophy since its inception in 2020.
While FIFA has yet to announce the additional MLS participant for the Club World Cup, Martino believes his team has demonstrated the “football fundamentals” necessary to earn a spot. He emphasized that the team’s focus remains on their upcoming match against Toronto FC, where they will aim to maintain their winning streak.
When asked about the possibility of resting key players, including star athlete Lionel Messi, Martino hinted that he would consider the accumulation of minutes played and potential fatigue. However, he also noted that Messi’s recent performances have shown significant improvement, indicating that he is regaining his football rhythm.
With two remaining matches, Inter Miami is poised to break the MLS record for most points recorded in a single season, currently held by the New England Revolution. A win in both matches would secure 74 points, surpassing the existing record.
