The Bronx Bombers have officially announced their starting pitcher for Game 2 of the American League Division Series, set to take place on Monday against either the Kansas City Royals or Baltimore Orioles. Carlos Rodon will take the mound, looking to build on his impressive bounce-back season.
However, the team’s Game 3 starter remains a mystery, with pitching coach Matt Blake revealing that the decision will likely be made after Game 1. The two contenders for the spot are Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt. Blake hinted that the team may choose between the two pitchers before the series starts, but wants to keep their options open in case they need to use either pitcher out of the bullpen.
Gil, a 26-year-old right-hander, was a standout performer during the regular season, finishing with a 15-7 record and a 3.50 ERA in 151⅔ innings across 29 starts. He’s a strong contender for AL Rookie of the Year, but has never pitched out of the bullpen as a major leaguer. Schmidt, on the other hand, has extensive experience as a reliever, posting a 2.85 ERA in 85.1 innings over 16 starts this season.
The team’s Game 1 starter, Gerrit Cole, would start Game 4 on regular rest if necessary, with Rodon available for Game 5 if needed. Rodon’s impressive season has been a welcome turnaround from his injury-riddled debut season in New York last year. He’s developed a more diverse arsenal, incorporating his curveball and changeup into his mix, and has avoided the injured list, making 32 starts.
Blake praised Rodon’s mental growth and ability to adapt to the league’s adjustments, saying, “I think he’s done a really nice job of just continuing to evolve.” Rodon will look to continue his strong form when he takes the mound in Game 2 at Yankee Stadium.
