Nashville Training Camp Update: Promising Young Player Sidelined with Hamstring Strain
The New Orleans Pelicans announced that one of their key players, 24-year-old forward Trey Murphy III, will likely miss the start of the regular season due to a right hamstring strain sustained during a recent practice session in Nashville, Tennessee.
Murphy, who averaged 14.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game last season, is set to be re-evaluated in three weeks. His absence will be felt, particularly given his impressive shooting stats – a 39.2% career 3-point shooter, including 38.0% on 7.8 attempts per game last season. Notably, Murphy and teammate CJ McCollum are the only players in franchise history to make at least 150 3s in multiple seasons.
Defensively, Murphy has proven himself to be a valuable asset, with opponents shooting only 42.2% from the floor when he was the closest defender last season – the fifth-lowest percentage among 201 players who were the closest defender on at least 500 shots.
The Pelicans will face the Chicago Bulls in their regular season opener on October 23, and Murphy’s availability remains uncertain. As he enters the final season of his rookie contract, his performance this year will be crucial in determining his future with the team.
