Renowned Racing Champion Opens Up About Decades-Long Battle with Depression
A global sports icon has courageously shared his struggles with depression, which began at a tender age. The seven-time champion, who has been racing competitively since childhood, attributed his struggles to the immense pressure of pursuing a career in motor racing and the painful experience of bullying at school.
“I think it was the weight of competition and struggling to fit in. The bullying took a toll on me. I had no one to confide in,” he revealed in a candid interview.
The champion, who made his professional debut at 21, went on to achieve unparalleled success, matching a legendary record of seven championships in 2020. However, behind the scenes, he was grappling with his mental health.
“I’ve struggled with depression throughout my life, from as early as 13… and in my twenties, I faced some really dark phases,” he shared.
Today, the champion feels more self-aware and mature, having learned to recognize patterns passed down from his parents and developed healthier coping mechanisms. “What might have triggered anger in the past no longer affects me the same way. I’ve become more refined,” he said.
In his quest for better mental health, the soon-to-be Ferrari driver has explored silent retreats and hopes to find a therapist who can provide guidance in the future. As he prepares for the next race in Austin, he stands as a beacon of hope for those struggling with mental health issues, inspiring others to speak out and seek help.
