Michigan Celebrates Legendary Athlete with Special Honor
In a move to recognize one of the state’s most beloved sports icons, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared September 30 as a special day of celebration. This honor is bestowed upon none other than Calvin Johnson, the legendary Detroit Lions wide receiver affectionately known as “Megatron.”
To commemorate this occasion, Johnson will be inducted into the prestigious Pride of the Lions during halftime of the Lions’ homecoming game against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football. This esteemed group recognizes the brightest stars in Lions history, and Johnson’s inclusion is a testament to his enduring impact on the team and the state.
Governor Whitmer, an avid Lions fan, collaborated with Johnson’s team and the Lions organization to make this special day a reality. In a statement, she praised Johnson as “one of the greatest wide receivers of all time” with a nickname that remains “the coolest in sports history.” Whitmer noted that Johnson brought an unforgettable level of excitement to every game he played.
Earlier this week, Johnson celebrated his 39th birthday with a private induction ceremony dinner at Ford Field. This latest honor adds to his impressive list of achievements, including his 2021 induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Throughout his nine-year career with the Lions, Johnson set franchise records for career receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.
