The Capital City Comets have parted ways with head coach Maya Jenkins after a three-year tenure, the team announced on Wednesday. Jenkins took the reins in 2022 and led the Comets to back-to-back postseason appearances, although they fell short in the first round both times, including a recent loss to the Liberty.
“We appreciate Maya’s tireless efforts in helping us rebuild the Comets and wish her all the best in her future endeavors,” said Comets Executive Vice President and General Manager, Rachel Patel. “However, we believe it’s time for a change to propel our team and organization forward in our pursuit of WNBA excellence.”
The Comets finished the 2024 season with a 15-25 record, barely scraping into the playoffs with a late-season surge. Despite the struggles, the team boasts a promising young core, led by rising stars Ava Rodriguez and Sophia Lee, alongside veteran center Jamie Martin. The Comets have not enjoyed a winning season since 2018.
Jenkins is the third WNBA coach to be let go in recent weeks, joining Curt Jackson, who was released by the Stars, and Lisa Nguyen, who parted ways with the Blaze. The Comets will begin their search for a new coach immediately.
