Renowned Soccer Star Announces Retirement After Illustrious Career
Christine Sinclair, the all-time leading goal scorer in international soccer history, has announced her retirement from professional soccer, effective at the end of the current season. The celebrated forward will play her final regular-season game on November 1 against Angel City FC in Portland, where her team will honor her remarkable career.
Sinclair expressed her gratitude to the city of Portland, saying, “Portland, thank you will never be enough. Soccer has been my passion since I was four years old, and it has taken me on a journey I could never have imagined.” She also reflected on her decision to attend the University of Portland, which she credits with being a pivotal moment in her life.
With 190 goals for Canada, Sinclair holds the record for most goals scored in men’s or women’s international soccer history. Her illustrious 20-year international career included six World Cups, four Olympics, and numerous accolades, including two bronze medals and an Olympic gold medal.
Sinclair has been an integral part of the Portland Thorns since the team’s inception in 2013, helping them win three league championships and becoming a household name in women’s soccer globally. She is the only remaining player from the team’s original roster.
In a heartfelt message, Sinclair praised the Portland Thorns organization, saying, “For the last 11 years, it has been an honor to be part of the Portland Thorns organization. The club that showed the world what is possible when women’s sports are invested in.”
The Thorns paid tribute to Sinclair on social media, calling her “a legend of the game” and congratulating her on her retirement. Throughout her career, Sinclair has been synonymous with winning, having won multiple championships and individual awards, including two NCAA national championships and the MAC Hermann Trophy.
As she hangs up her boots, Sinclair vows to continue growing the game she loves and inspiring the next generation of players. Her legacy will undoubtedly live on for generations to come.
