The New Orleans Pelicans have secured a key piece of their roster, inking a two-year, $9 million contract extension with dynamic guard Jose Alvarado. The 26-year-old had one year remaining on his current deal, but will now be tied to the Pelicans through the 2025-26 season, with a player option for the following year.
Alvarado’s tenacious on-court presence has endeared him to fans, who appreciate his boundless energy and tireless work ethic. Since joining the Pelicans in 2021, the 6-foot guard has become an integral part of the team’s identity. Prior to his NBA career, Alvarado honed his skills during a four-year stint at Georgia Tech.
Last season, Alvarado contributed 7.1 points and 2.1 assists per game across 56 appearances, earning him a sixth-place finish in the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year voting. This year, he’s poised to assume a crucial role as the team’s second-unit point guard, playing behind Dejounte Murray, who was acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks earlier this year.
As the Pelicans strive to secure a postseason berth for the second consecutive year – a feat they’ve only achieved twice in their 23-year history – Alvarado’s extension provides a significant boost to their chances.
