Rising Star Lachlan Galvin Eyes Maiden Representative Debut
In a remarkable rookie season, 19-year-old Lachlan Galvin has been selected for the prestigious Prime Minister’s XIII squad, set to face Papua New Guinea on October 13. This marks a significant milestone in his promising career, as he looks to make his maiden representative appearance.
The highly anticipated match in Port Moresby will also see the return of seasoned coach Brad Fittler, who will be joined by Australian national team coach Mal Meninga. The game serves as a platform for emerging and fringe players to showcase their skills, with many expected to go on to represent their country in the future.
This year’s fixture holds added significance, as it paves the way for the NRL’s likely expansion into Papua New Guinea. The rugby league-loving nation is expected to join the competition in 2028, with support from the Australian government.
According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, “These games represent a unique opportunity to share our passion for rugby league with our closest neighbors and dear friends.”
Galvin’s selection is a testament to his outstanding first season, which has been a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing year for his club. If chosen to play, it will be his first game since serving a two-game suspension for a hip drop tackle.
Joining Galvin in the squad are 10 other players without representative experience, including Ethan Bullemor, Kobe Hetherington, and Xavier Savage. Damien Cook, a seasoned campaigner, will captain the side, while Luke Brooks has been selected following a strong first season as Manly’s five-eighth.
In the women’s Prime Minister’s XIII, Kezie Apps will return from injury to captain the side against PNG’s women’s team. Abbi Church and Lauren Brown are among the star-studded lineup, fresh from their impressive performances in the NRLW season.
