New York’s Basketball Darling Wins Over Fans and Celebrities Alike
In the midst of a thrilling playoff season, New York’s hometown hero, Sabrina Ionescu, has captured the hearts of fans and celebrities alike. The talented point guard’s relationship with a renowned filmmaker dates back to her rookie year, when she was drafted by the New York Liberty.
The filmmaker, a self-proclaimed basketball aficionado, was one of the first to congratulate Ionescu on her new beginnings in the Big Apple. “He was the first person to call me, sharing his excitement about the Liberty’s No. 1 pick,” Ionescu recalled after leading her team to an 87-77 victory over the Las Vegas Aces. “We’ve had small talk every time we’ve met, and I’ve always invited him to come watch us play.”
On Sunday, the filmmaker took Ionescu up on her offer, attending the game at Barclays Center clad in an Ionescu jersey. He was in high spirits, cheering loudly and engaging in good-natured banter with opposing players. Aces guard Kelsey Plum was the target of his playful jabs, prompting her to joke, “I told him to speak up, but it was all in good fun. It’s awesome that he’s such a big sports fan.”
This marks the filmmaker’s second consecutive Liberty playoff game, having also attended the opening-round clincher against the Atlanta Dream. During that game, he shared a memorable high-five with Ionescu, which she described as “injecting New York energy into my veins.”
The sellout crowd of 14,015 was electric, featuring notable Liberty fans such as Jason Sudeikis and Tracy Morgan. As Ionescu continues to dazzle on the court, it’s clear that she’s won over the hearts of New Yorkers from all walks of life.
