A leading Formula 1 strategist believes a former champion’s decision to switch teams was the catalyst for a decline in their performance. The driver, who secured seven of their eight Grand Prix victories with their original team, made the move in 2019 and has since struggled to replicate their previous success.
The strategist suggests that the driver’s inability to secure a winning car at their new teams hindered their progress, and that they lost their competitive edge as a result. “The spark that drove them to victory was no longer there,” they said. “We’ve seen glimpses of their former self, but it’s been inconsistent.”
The strategist also implied that the driver’s decision to leave their original team was motivated by a desire to escape the shadow of a rising star. “They had concerns about being able to compete with their teammate, and were swayed by the promises of another team,” they explained.
Despite showing flashes of brilliance, including a notable victory at Monza, the driver has been unable to sustain a challenge at the top of the grid. Their recent demotion has paved the way for a young talent to take the reins, and the strategist is keen to nurture this new blood.
With six races remaining this season, the young driver has a chance to prove themselves and stake a claim for a seat at one of the top teams next year. The strategist’s vision is to create a feeder system that develops talented drivers and prepares them for the top level, and this latest move is seen as a key step in achieving that goal.
