Charlotte Hornets Center to Miss Training Camp with Foot Injury
The Charlotte Hornets announced on Friday that center Mark Williams will be sidelined for the start of training camp and preseason due to a strained tendon in his left foot. The injury occurred during a workout on Thursday, and Williams is expected to be reevaluated in two weeks.
The 6-foot-11 center, drafted 15th overall out of Duke in 2022, showed promise in his rookie season, averaging 12.7 points and 9.7 rebounds in 19 games. However, his season was cut short due to a back injury that kept him out of action after December 8.
When fully healthy, Williams is projected to be the starting center for the Hornets under new head coach Charles Lee, who brings championship experience from his time with the Boston Celtics. This season also marks the first full campaign for Jeff Peterson, the team’s new executive vice president of basketball operations, who joined the Hornets in March after a successful stint with the Brooklyn Nets.
The Hornets’ new ownership group, led by Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin, who acquired the team from Michael Jordan last August, has made significant changes to the franchise, including the hiring of Lee and Peterson. Despite the setback, the team remains optimistic about Williams’ potential and looks forward to his return to the court.
