In a stunning display of cycling prowess, a young Slovenian phenom claimed victory in the men’s road race at the world championships, solidifying his position as the sport’s brightest star. The 26-year-old sensation launched a daring solo attack with just over 50 kilometers remaining, leaving the competition in his wake.
Overcome with emotion, the three-time Grand Tour winner crossed the finish line in tears, covering his face with his hands before triumphantly pumping his arms in the air. He finished a commanding 34 seconds ahead of Australian Ben O’Connor, with defending champion Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands taking third place in a photo finish.
The Slovenian superstar’s dominant performance capped off an incredible year, during which he achieved the rare feat of winning the world championships, a Grand Tour, and a prestigious classic in the same season. His impressive victory was reminiscent of his previous solo attacks, which earned him victories in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic and the Strade Bianche.
Despite having a strong teammate by his side, the Slovenian sensation didn’t need any assistance, making a breakaway 100 kilometers from the finish alongside French rider Pavel Sivakov. As the peloton tried to reel them in, the Slovenian rider maintained his lead, eventually dropping Sivakov and riding solo to the title.
The grueling 274-kilometer route, which featured over 4,470 meters of elevation gain, was completed in an impressive 6 hours, 27 minutes, and 30 seconds. The victory marked a triumphant end to the season for the Slovenian rider, who had previously finished third in the world championships.
