In a stunning turn of events, the Pittsburgh Steelers suffered their first loss of the season, falling 27-24 to the Indianapolis Colts. Quarterback Justin Fields struggled to find his footing in the first half, stumbling over his center’s feet on the first snap and setting the tone for a lackluster performance.
The Steelers’ offense sputtered throughout the half, with a failed fourth-down conversion and a costly fumble by George Pickens near the goal line. By halftime, the Colts had built a 17-3 lead, leaving the Steelers to play catch-up.
Fields attributed the slow start to a lack of focus and intent, saying, “It’s not about doing something special or having a different pregame routine. It’s about coming out and performing from the first play.”
Despite a stronger second half, which saw the Steelers score three touchdowns, they were unable to overcome their early mistakes. Fields finished the game 22-of-34 with 312 yards and one touchdown.
The Steelers’ struggles were not limited to the offense, as the defense also struggled to find its rhythm. They allowed six plays of at least 15 yards, including a 32-yard gain on the first play of the game.
Coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged the team’s sloppy play, saying, “The real tangible reasons why we lost this game, man, it’s on us. We were sloppy in a lot of ways.”
As the Steelers look to bounce back from their first loss, they will need to address their slow starts and find ways to avoid needing comeback situations. With their next game on the horizon, the team will need to regroup and refocus if they hope to get back on track.
