The buzz surrounding a certain father-son duo joining forces on the court has left me with mixed emotions. On one hand, I take pleasure in the potential chaos this experiment could bring to a team I’m not too fond of. On the other hand, I think it’s remarkable that they’ll make history by playing together this season.
The controversy surrounding the draft pick and subsequent contract was, in my opinion, overblown. The 55th pick is the perfect time to take a risk on a prospect, and if it keeps their star player happy, it’s a no-brainer. I never expected the young player to be NBA-ready immediately, as most second-round picks aren’t.
However, based on recent quotes from the team’s management, it’s clear that this storyline is going to be exhausting all season long. I’m starting to feel a little sympathetic towards the young player. Despite being in the NBA and earning a substantial contract, the team isn’t doing him any favors. The emphasis on sharing the court together already feels like too much.
Shouldn’t the coach be making decisions about playing time, not the star player? If the team had drafted anyone else, would there be discussions about when they’d play together? It all feels like a performance rather than a genuine effort to improve the team.
Maybe they’ll get this over with in a preseason game, but does that even count? Would we be hearing stories about the star player dominating practice if it wasn’t his son? It all comes across as an unserious organization.
While I’m excited to see the young player develop and potentially become a serviceable NBA player, I think we can all see ourselves getting tired of this circus quickly. Every mistake he makes will be magnified, and it’s going to be a long eight months.
