Cleveland’s Season Finale Washed Out, Star Player Falls Short of Milestone

The final game of the regular season between the Cleveland Guardians and Houston Astros was cancelled on Sunday due to inclement weather, denying third baseman José Ramírez a chance to make history. With the Astros set to begin their postseason campaign on Tuesday, and a steady rain forecasted for hours to come, the game was called off after a lengthy 3-hour, 5-minute delay.

The Guardians finished the season with a 92-69 record, earning them the title of AL Central champions. They will host an ALDS game on October 5, facing either the AL West champion Astros or the Detroit Tigers, who secured a wild-card spot.

In a rare display of cooperation, Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt and Houston manager Joe Espada met with the umpiring crew, head groundskeeper, and Guardians front office members on the tarped field to discuss the situation. Meanwhile, die-hard fans who braved the rain watched the Browns-Las Vegas Raiders game on the giant scoreboard at Progressive Field.

Ramírez ended the season with 39 home runs, narrowly missing out on becoming the seventh player in MLB history to join the exclusive 40-40 club. He also fell one double short of achieving a rare 40-40-40 season, a feat only accomplished by Alfonso Soriano in 2006.

The Guardians’ impressive season, which saw them win 16 more games than last year, led to a significant increase in attendance. For the first time since 2017, the team drew over 2 million fans to their home stadium.
