The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) has announced a significant surge in attendance for the 2024 regular season, with a remarkable 48% increase over the previous year. This season, the league averaged an impressive 9,807 fans per game, a substantial jump from the 6,615 per game average in 2023.
The total attendance for the 2024 season reached an impressive 2,353,735 fans, the highest in 22 years. Moreover, the league saw a notable increase in sellouts, with 154 games selling out, compared to just 45 in the previous season.
Three games stood out for their exceptional attendance, with over 20,000 fans in attendance. The highest attendance was recorded on September 19, when the Indiana Fever, led by rookie sensation Caitlin Clark, visited the Washington Mystics, drawing a record-breaking crowd of 20,711. The Fever also drew large crowds in two other games, with 20,366 fans attending their match against the Las Vegas Aces on July 2, and 20,333 fans attending their game against the Mystics on June 7.
The Fever’s success, largely attributed to Clark’s impact, contributed significantly to the league’s increased popularity. The team set a new single-season home attendance record, with 340,715 fans attending their games, surpassing the previous record of 250,565 set by the New York Liberty in 2001.
In addition to the impressive attendance figures, the WNBA also reported a record 22 regular-season telecasts averaging at least 1 million viewers, further solidifying the league’s growing popularity.
