The Women’s Super League (WSL) has finally shown signs of growth, with tight results across the board, except for Chelsea’s 7-0 thrashing of newly promoted Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, in Europe, champions continued to dominate, with Bayern Munich defeating Werder Bremen, Roma brushing aside Napoli, Barcelona hitting Granada for ten, and Lyon scoring six against Strasbourg.
In the WSL, Grace Clinton has started the season on a high note, scoring in each of her first two games to help Manchester United secure back-to-back wins. Her impressive start has proven why United fought so hard to keep her, and she should be leading United’s title charge.
Chelsea, under new manager Sonia Bompastor, has netted eight WSL goals and conceded none, with a 7-0 demolition of Crystal Palace reminiscent of Emma Hayes’ Chelsea sides. Despite the impressive results, Bompastor admits the Blues remain a “work in progress” and says there are plenty areas needing refinement.
In Germany, Eintracht Frankfurt finally showed their best against a top side, beating Wolfsburg 3-0. The hosts scored either side of the break and left little room for their opponents to get back into the tie. It was a performance that has been a long time coming for Frankfurt, with Nicole Anyomi starring with a brace.
In other European action, Barcelona continued their dominance in Liga F with a 10-goal win over Granada, while Roma lost in transition, conceding for the seventh-consecutive competitive game. Lyon dominated Strasbourg in a 6-0 win, with Lindsey Horan bagging a brace for the second week running.
In the WSL, Brighton looked bright against Manchester City, with a better structure off the ball and understanding of when to counter. Leverkusen held on to beat Hoffenheim 2-1, while Bayern Munich won 4-0 over Werder Bremen despite losing a player to a red card. Georgia Stanway’s strike from outside the box settled Bayern back down, and Everton continued to struggle with injuries, losing Inma Gabarro to a heavy fall.
Liverpool’s Olivia Smith scored a stunning solo goal against West Ham, but the Reds fell into a lull and allowed the home side to equalise late on. Real Madrid continued their impressive form, winning 4-1 over UD Tenerife, while Leicester’s off-the-ball shape and understanding of when to strike on the counter impressed against Arsenal. Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa was a thrilling end to the WSL weekend, with Beth England striking an equaliser in the 96th minute.
