The highly anticipated Women’s Super League showdown between Chelsea and Manchester United has been rescheduled, just a week prior to the original kickoff date. The decision comes in response to the club’s inaugural Champions League match, which is set to take place only two days after the initial WSL fixture.
The Champions League schedule, released on Saturday, revealed that Chelsea will face off against Real Madrid on October 8 at Kingsmeadow. In light of this, the WSL has prioritized player welfare, recognizing the potential strain of back-to-back matches on the athletes.
A league statement apologized for any inconvenience to fans, emphasizing the importance of putting player well-being first. A new date for the fixture will be announced in the coming weeks. Both Chelsea and Manchester United have enjoyed a strong start to their campaigns, each securing two wins in their opening two league games.
Chelsea, the reigning WSL champions, fell short in the Champions League semifinals last season, ultimately losing to Barcelona. The Spanish powerhouse went on to claim the title, defeating Lyon 2-0 in the final. This summer, Sonia Bompastor took the reins as Chelsea manager, succeeding Emma Hayes.
