This weekend, women’s boxing takes center stage with three title fights across the globe. On Friday, two bouts took place in New York and Georgia, while a third is scheduled for Saturday in Sheffield, England.
At The Theater inside Madison Square Garden in New York, Mikaela Mayer secured the WBO welterweight title by defeating Sandy Ryan. This victory marks Mayer’s second divisional title, having previously held the WBO and IBF junior lightweight titles.
Ryan, who traveled from England for the fight, was initially favored to win. However, Mayer’s speed and sharpness ultimately gave her the edge. The bout was intense, with both fighters landing significant punches. Mayer suffered a cut above her left eye in the fourth round, but rebounded strongly in the later rounds.
In a shocking incident, Ryan was struck by an open red paint can as she left her hotel for the venue. She was uninjured but shaken, and her team believes the incident was orchestrated by Mayer’s camp, which Mayer denies.
Also on Friday, Alycia Baumgardner put her WBC junior lightweight title on the line against Delfine Persoon at Trilith Studios Town Stage in Fayetteville, Georgia. Unfortunately, the fight ended in a no contest in the fourth round due to an accidental headbutt that left Persoon with a gash above her right eye.
On Saturday, Rhiannon Dixon will defend her WBO lightweight title against Terri Harper in Sheffield, England. This will be Dixon’s first defense of the title, which she won by defeating Karen Elizabeth Carabajal in April.
The weekend’s events mark a significant moment for women’s boxing, with three high-stakes title fights showcasing the skill and determination of female fighters.
