LONDON – Tottenham Hotspur’s manager has expressed concerns about the heavy workload of star forward Son Heung-Min, stating that it’s unsustainable for the 32-year-old to feature in every match this season. Son limped off the pitch during the team’s Europa League victory over Qarabag, sparking doubts about his availability for the upcoming match against Manchester United.
Son has made an impressive 415 appearances for Spurs in all competitions since joining the club in 2015 and has played in every game this season. However, his coach believes that his current pace is not maintainable, citing fatigue in his hamstring as a major concern.
The forward recently spoke out about the grueling schedule of elite footballers, highlighting the significant risk of injury. When asked if it’s sustainable for Son to continue playing at such a high level, his coach replied, “No… I would have wanted to ease his workload in this early part of the year. But due to injuries to other players, he’s played more than I intended.”
The coach emphasized the need to manage Son’s minutes, considering his international commitments with South Korea. He acknowledged that Son’s competitive spirit drives him to play as many games as possible, but the coach must prioritize the player’s well-being.
The coach also refused to consider asking Son to retire from international football to focus on his club career, understanding the importance of representing his country. Instead, he believes that players should make their own decisions about their careers, as their time in the sport is limited.
Ultimately, the coach is committed to finding a balance between Son’s club and international responsibilities, ensuring that the player remains healthy and fulfilled throughout his career.
