The city’s beloved football team has made a triumphant comeback, defeating their rivals by a staggering 60 points to claim their first championship title in over 20 years. The team’s star players, including midfielder Alex Thompson (33 possessions) and young gun Ethan Brown (30), shone brightly in the 18.12 (120) to 9.6 (60) victory at the iconic stadium on Saturday.
The team’s coach, 63-year-old veteran Jack Taylor, has led the team to the top of the mountain after taking over eight years ago following a dismal three-win season. Taylor is not only the oldest coach to win a championship but also the first to achieve this feat without ever playing a senior game.
Fittingly, legendary former coach Mark Davis presented the championship cup to Taylor, co-captains Thompson and Ryan Jenkins, and former skipper Michael Martin, who led the team to a historic hat-trick of titles in 2001-2003.
In a remarkable turnaround, the team rose from fifth place to claim the championship, becoming only the second team under the current system to achieve this feat. Brown joined his father, James, as a championship winner and was named the best player on the field in front of a packed crowd of 100,013 fans.
“I’m so proud of this team,” Brown said. “We’ve had our ups and downs, but we stuck together and dug deep.”
Thompson and Jenkins were awarded the inaugural Coach’s Medals as winning captains. Teammates Julian Styles and Lucas Brooks both kicked four goals, while veteran forward Michael Hall (26 possessions) was influential and youngster Jack Lee (16 touches, 2.4) stood out in what could be his final game, as he considers retirement.
The team’s defense, led by Jenkins, was rock-solid, and their strategy paid off as they restricted their opponents to just nine goals. The team’s celebrations will continue for days, and their championship win will be remembered for years to come.
