The Bronx Bombers Face a Tough Decision Ahead of the Postseason
As the regular season came to a close, the New York Yankees were forced to make a difficult decision regarding their roster. With star first baseman Anthony Rizzo sidelined due to a hand injury, the team had to choose between placing him on the injured list or making room for another player.
Rizzo, who suffered a fracture to two fingers in his right hand, would only be eligible to return for the American League Division Series if he was added to the injured list. However, by optioning right-hander Scott Effross to the minors, the Yankees kept the door open for Rizzo’s potential return.
Manager Aaron Boone expressed caution about Rizzo’s chances of playing in the ALDS, stating that it’s a “long shot” but worth exploring. Rizzo himself is optimistic, saying he’ll receive treatment and test his hand later in the week to determine his availability.
The injury is a setback for Rizzo, who has struggled this season with a.228 batting average and only eight home runs in 92 games. However, his defense at first base is unparalleled, and his absence would be deeply felt.
In his place, the Yankees may turn to DJ LeMahieu, who has been recovering from a hip injury, or rookie Ben Rice, who has limited experience at the position. Other options include utility man Oswaldo Cabrera and outfielder Trent Grisham, who have never played first base professionally.
As the team prepares for the postseason, they’ll be keeping a close eye on Rizzo’s progress, hoping that he can make a miraculous recovery in time for the ALDS.
